| Casting Call - “Sweeney Todd” |
|

|
|
• WHAT? — “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” (2007), the musical adapted from the stage play about a sinister barber out for revenge.
• WHO? – Mrs. Lovett, the only friend of serial killer Sweeney Todd. She makes meat pies out of Sweeney’s victims. She is played by Helena Bonham Carter.
• WHY? – Mrs. Lovett is sinister, yet harbors strong feelings for Sweeney Todd. She shows that while a character may be dark, they can still have light emotions.
• PLOT? – Based on the 19th century legend of Sweeney Todd and the hit Broadway musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, Sweeney Todd a.k.a Benjamin Barker returns to London after being sent away by Judge Turpin with the help of a sailor, Anthony Hope. He opens a barber shop above Mrs. Lovett’s Meat Pie Shop were she sells “the worst pies in London.” With the help of Mrs. Lovett, Todd tries to rid of all the people who have ever done him wrong and hopes to be reunited with his daughter, Joanna, who is now Judge Turpin’s ward. |

• [Singing] “Mrs Mooney has a pie shop. Does a business, but I notice something weird - lately all her neighbour’s cats have disappeared.”
• Mrs. Lovett: “Since marine doesn’t appeal to you, how about Rear Admiral?”
Sweeney Todd: “No, no. It’s too salty. I prefer… General.”
Mrs. Lovett: “With or without ‘is privates? “With,” is extra!”
• “And who says the week’s out yet? It’s only Friday.”
• Mrs. Lovett: “You’re barking mad.”
Sweeney Todd: “The years, no doubt changed me.”
• Sweeney Todd: [Holding up his razor] “At last my arm is complete again!”
Mrs. Lovett: “That’s all very well. But what’re we gonna do about him?” [Points to the hand of a dead body sticking out of a box across the room]
• Sweeney Todd: “Fifteen years *dreaming*, I might come home to a wife and child.”
Mrs. Lovett: “Benjamin Barker.”
Sweeney Todd: “Not Barker. Sweeney Todd, now. And he will have his revenge.”
• Sweeney Todd: “Where’s my wife?”
Mrs. Lovett: “She’s gone. And he’s got your daugther.”
Sweeney Todd: “Judge Turpin!”
Mrs. Lovett: “You’ve got to leave this behind yourself now.”
Sweeney Todd: “No! These are desperate times. And desperate measures are called for.” |
| • Mrs. Lovett has a dark, pale appearance, keeping in line with the film’s horrific nature. She has unkempt, dark hair, and wears a lacy, elegant dress in hues of black and red. As the film is set in London, she has a thick English accent and, as it is a musical, she has quite the singing voice. |
