• WHAT? — “The Rundown” (2003), a film about a man who is hired to bring a mobster’s son home from the Amazon.
• WHO? – Mariana, who becomes entwined in the action after Travis (Seann William Scott) finds the Gato, which she and her militant tribe have been searching for. She is played by Rosario Dawson.
• WHY? – Mariana succeeds in outsmarting Beck (The Rock) and Travis several times, finding ways to reach her own goals. She is fighting for a just cause, looking to bring her people out from under the rule of an oppressive leader. She is intelligent in many cultural matters. Aside from that, wouldn’t it be nice to see The Rock star aside a WWE Diva?
• PLOT? – In order to get out of hock with mobster Billy Walker, restaraunteur-turned-”retrieval expert” Beck has to go down to Brazil and retrieve Billy’s ne’er-do-well archaeologist-wannabe son Travis, who is searching for an ancient gold idol called the Gato del Diablo. This idol is prized by not only the local population as the path to their salvation, but by Cornelius Hatcher, slavedriving operator of the Helldorado mining town who oppresses said population in the name of profits, and Hatcher just won’t let Beck leave with Travis. |

• Travis Walker: [Suggesting a name for a “new” flower] “I can only think of one word that fits something so beautiful. Mariana.”
Mariana: “How much do you want?”
• Beck: “I’m looking for a man.”
Mariana: “What’s your type?”
Beck: [Travis walks out of the bathroom] “His name’s Travis Walker.” [Travis stops, slowly turning around, with Beck’s back is to him] “He’s in his twenties, he’s got sandy hair, a beard, wearing a blue shirt and jeans, right now he’s got a real bewildered look on his face.”
• Mariana: “Don’t pee in the water.”
Beck: “Why?”
Mariana: “A candiru, a vicious parasite will swim up the urine into your pau.”
Beck: “Swim up my what?”
Mariana: “Your pinto. It’ll swim up your ding-dong. And once it gets in, you can’t get it out.”
Beck: [Stammers] “Well, then what?”
Mariana: “They have to amputate.”
Beck: “Not this boy’s pinto. Uh-uh, not today!” |
| • As the film is set in the Amazon, Mariana wears clothes that best combat the heat. All of the characters seem to feel the humidity, as evident in their appearances. Mariana has dark skin and hair and an accent to go with her Amazonian heritage. |
