| Casting Call - “Pirates of the Caribbean” |
|

|
|
• WHAT? — The “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise (2003, 2006, & 2007), the epic pirate trilogy based of the Disney World ride.
• WHO? – Elizabeth Swann, the Governor’s daughter who, through the course of the three movies, transformed herself from a proper society girl to a dauntless pirate. She is played by Keira Knightley.
• WHY? – Elizabeth could be considered the total package - beautiful, intelligent, courageous, tough, and compassionate. Her transformation into the “Pirate King” seems a perfect fit for Melina, who is known at times to be both dainty and dangerous.
• PLOT? –
• CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL: After Elizabeth Swann is kidnapped by the evil Captain Barbossa (Rush) and his crew, the blacksmith Will Turner and the pirate Jack Sparrow, who used to be captain of Barbossa’s ship, team up to rescue Ms. Swann. But they soon discover that the pirates have their own secret, sinister purpose with Ms. Swann, and that there’s much more going on that a simple kidnapping.
• DEAD MAN’S CHEST: Once again thrown into the world of the supernatural, Captain Jack Sparrow finds out that he owes a blood debt to the legendary Davey Jones, Captain of the ghostly Flying Dutchman. With time running out, Jack must find a way out of his debt or else be doomed to eternal damnation and servitude in the afterlife. And as if this weren’t enough, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann are arrested and sentenced to death unless Will can get Lord Beckett Jack’s compass, who are forced to join Jack on yet another misadventure.
• AT WORLD’S END: After Elizabeth, Will, and Captain Barbossa rescue Captain Jack Sparrow from the the land of the dead, they must face their foes, Davy Jones and Lord Cutler Beckett. Beckett, now with control of Jones’ heart, forms a dark alliance with him in order to rule the seas and wipe out the last of the Pirates. Now, Jack, Barbossa, Will, Elizabeth, Tia Dalma, and crew must call the Pirate Lords from the four corners of the globe, including the infamous Sao Feng, to gathering. The Pirate Lords want to release the goddess Calypso, Davy Jones’s damned lover, from the trap they sent her to out of fear, in which the Pirate Lords must combine the 9 pieces that bound her by ritual to undo it and release her in hopes that she will help them fight. With this, all pirates will stand together and will make their final stand for freedom against Beckett, Jones, Norrington, the Flying Dutchman, and the entire East India Trading Company. |

• Governor Swann: [Elizabeth is being laced into a corset] “Elizabeth, how’s it coming?”
Elizabeth Swann: “It’s difficult to say.”
Governor Swann: “I’m told it’s the latest fashion in London.”
Elizabeth Swann: “Well, women in London must have learned not to breathe.”
• James Norrington: “I, uh, apologize if I seem forward, but I must speak my mind… Ah, this promotion throws into sharp relief that which I have… not yet achieved: a marriage to a fine woman. You have become a fine woman, Elizabeth.”
Elizabeth Swann: [Her corset is choking her] “I can’t breathe!”
James Norrington: “Yes, I’m… I’m a bit nervous myself.”
Elizabeth Swann: [Elizabeth faints and topples over the wall].
• Jack Sparrow: [Wakes up and sees Elizabeth burning the rum] “No! Not good! Stop! Not good! What are you doing? You burned all the food, the shade… the rum!”
Elizabeth Swann: “Yes, the rum is gone.”
Jack Sparrow: “Why is the rum gone?”
Elizabeth Swann: “One: because it is a *vile* drink that turns even the most respectable men into complete scoundrels. Two: that signal is over a thousand feet high. The entire royal navy is out looking for me, do you think there is even the slightest chance they wont see it?”
Jack Sparrow: “But why is the rum gone?”
Elizabeth Swann: “Mark my words, give it an hour maybe two, keep a weather eye out and there will be white sails on that horizon.”
• Jacoby: [Attacking Will] “I’m going to teach you the meaning of pain!”
Elizabeth Swann: “You like pain?” [Hits him with a pole] “Try wearing a corset.”
• Governor Swann: [Talking about Will] “So, this is the path you’ve chosen? After all, he is a blacksmith.”
Elizabeth Swann: “No. He’s a pirate.”
• Elizabeth Swann: “Will! Why is this happening?”
Will Turner: “I don’t know. You look beautiful.”
Elizabeth Swann: “I think it’s bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding.”• Will Turner: “And then I intend to return here to marry you.”
Elizabeth Swann: “Properly?”
Will Turner: “Eagerly, if you’ll still have me.”
Elizabeth Swann: “If it weren’t for these bars, I’d have you already.”• Jack Sparrow: [With his back to Elizabeth, thinking that she is a man] “Come to join my crew, lad? Welcome aboard!”
Elizabeth Swann: “I’m here to find the man I love.”
Jack Sparrow: [Startled] “Deeply flattered, boy, but my first and only love is the sea.”
Elizabeth Swann: “Meaning William Turner, Captain Sparrow.”
Jack Sparrow: [Turns around] “Elizabeth!” [to Gibbs] “Hide the rum.”
• “This is Barbaric! This is no way for grown men to… Oh, Fine! Let’s just pull out our swords and start banging away at each other. That will solve everything! I’ve had it! I’ve had it with wobbly-legged, rum-soaked PIRATES!”
• Captain Barbossa: “I trust you to know your place in front of Captain Sao Feng.”
Elizabeth Swann: “Is he that terrifying?”
Captain Barbossa: “He’s a lot like meself, but absent me merciful nature and sense of fair play.”
• Governor Swann: “Elizabeth, are you dead?”
Elizabeth Swann: “No!”
Governor Swann: “I think I am.”
• Captain Jocard: “Who is this traitor?”
Captian Barbossa: “Not likely one among us.”
Elizabeth Swann: “Where’s Will?”
Jack Sparrow: “Not among us.”
• “Pretty speech from a captor, but words whispered through prison bars lose their charm.”
• “You will listen to me! LISTEN! The other ships will still be looking to us, to the Black Pearl, to lead, and what will they see? Frightened bilgerats aboard a derelict ship? No, no they will see free men and freedom! And what the enemy will see, they will see the flash of our cannons, and they will hear the ringing of our swords, and they will know what we can do! By the sweat of our brow and the strength of our backs and the courage in our hearts! Gentlemen, Hoist the Colors!”
• Will Turner: [While fighting in a maelstrom] “Elizabeth, will you marry me?”
Elizabeth Swann: “I don’t think now’s the best time!”
Will Turner: “Now may be the only time! I love you. I’ve made my choice. What’s yours?”
Elizabeth Swann: “Barbossa! Marry us!”
Captain Barbossa: [Fighting] “I’m a little busy at the moment!”
• Will Turner: “Elizabeth Swann, do you take me to be your husband?”
Elizabeth Swann: “I do.”
Will Turner: “Great!”
Elizabeth Swann: “Will Turner, do you take me to be your wife, in sickness and in health, with health being less likely?”
Will Turner: “I do.”
Captain Barbossa: “You may kiss.. [Fighting] You may kiss.. [Fighting] JUST KISS!”
• Elizabeth Swann: [Quoting Jack from the first movie] “Jack, it would never have worked out between us.”
Jack Sparrow: “You keep telling yourself that, darling.” |
| • With Elizabeth’s British background, it seems strange to picture Melina in that role. Perhaps, if Elzabeth’s mother, who died before the time frame of the movie and was never seen, was closer to the ethnicity of Melina, her dark hair and darker skin would be more plausible. To fit the bill of the first movie, Melina would dress in elegant 17th century gowns and corsets and wear bouffant hairdos. In the second film, a glamorous wedding dress and men’s pirate attire would suffice. In the final and third movie, Elizabeth wears dark robes and pants until she switches to the attire of a Chinese pirate, which consists of an elaborate robe with dragon patterns. |
