| Casting Call - “Fight Club” |
|

|
• WHAT? — “Fight Club” (1999), the classic dark comedy/drama that defined a generation and was adapted from the best selling novel of the same name.
• WHO? – Marla Singer, the witty, dark, and intelligent “lover” of the lead character. She is the only female in the film, and her dark disposition adds to the film’s cynical nature. She is played by Helena Bonham Carter.
• WHY? — Despite her many troubles, she shows herself to be a strong-willed character, always fervently pursuing what she wants, not allowing herself to be pushed around. Underneath her cynical nature, she shows dashes of compassion for Tyler. The duality of her character, apparent mostly when the entire plot is revealed, seems to shift like a light switch. Melina seems able to play such a character, as she demonstrates such abilities in her mood swings and attitude swerves both in and out of the ring.
• PLOT? – You’re young. You have an easy, well-paid deskjob. You have a condo, Swedish furniture, artistic coffee tables and a fridge full of condiments. Yet you feel emotionally and spiritually empty. You eventually find comfort in going to support groups for lukemia and cancer victims when there’s nothing wrong with you until they’re hijacked from you by another faker. Then you meet Tyler Durden, a man that shows you that not only can you live without material needs but that self-destruction, the collapse of society and making dynamite from soap might not be such a bad idea either. |
| MOVIE INFO - CHARACTER INFO - FAN? |
| • “My God. I haven’t been fucked like that since grade school.”• [Holding up a wad of cash] “You’re not getting this back. I consider it asshole tax.”• [Talking to the Narrator about who gets to attend the Testicular Cancer group] “Well, technically, I have more of a right to be there than you. You still have your balls.”• “It’s a bridesmaid’s dress. Someone loved it intensely for one day, and then tossed it. Like a Christmas tree. So special. Then, bam, it’s on the side of the road. [Grabs Narrator’s crotch] Tinsel still clinging to it. Like a sex crime victim. Underwear inside out. Bound with electrical tape.”
• “You’re Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Jackass!”
• [After taking a bottle of sleeping pills] “This isn’t a real suicide-thing. This is probably one of those cry-for-help things.”
• “You fuck me, then snub me. You love me, you hate me. You show me a sensitive side, then you turn into a total asshole. Is this a pretty accurate description of our relationship, Tyler?” |
| • Marla is known for her grungy, dirty look. She has unkempt hair, heavy eye makeup, and dark circles around her eyes, completing a sunken-in face. By simply adopting the facial and hair techniques and wearing small, grungy dresses, Melina could look every bit of Marla Singer. |
