| Casting Call - “The Departed” |
|

|
|
• WHAT? — “The Departed” (2006), a crime drama about two men who go undercover in opposite sides of the law.
• WHO? – Madolyn Madden, a police phsyciatrist who comes between Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon). She is played by Vera Farmiga.
• WHY? – She innocently becomes involved with Sullivan, but she is forced to make a tough decision when the truth about him comes out. She is far from a conniving woman, but her emotions get the best of her when she gets closer to Costigan. Her character is as layered as the movie itself.
• PLOT? – Two just-graduated officers from Massachusetts State Police Academy follow opposite sides of the law: William Costigan is assigned to work undercover with the Irish mobster Frank Costello to get evidences to arrest him. His true identity is only known by his superiors Dignam and Oliver Queenan. The protégée of Costello, Colin Sullivan, is promoted in the Massachusetts State Police and is the informer of Costello. Each police officer gives his best effort trying to disclose the identity of the other “rat”. |
| MOVIE INFO - CHARACTER INFO - FAN? |
• Madolyn Madden: [While Sullivan is leaving the elevator] “Here, this is my card.”
Colin Sullivan: “Nah, I don’t need that. I’m a detective. I’ll find you.” [The elevator door begins to close, and he reaches back in.] “No, I’m just kidding, I need the card.”
• Madolyn Madden: [While looking at an odd dessert] “I’m waiting for you to make your move.”
Colin Sullivan: “I don’t know, if that thing moves I’m gonna shoot it.”
• Madolyn Madden: “Why is the last patient of the day always the hardest?”
Billy Costigan: “Because you’re tired and you don’t give a shit. It’s not super-natural.”
• Madolyn Madden: “What do you expect coming in here?”
Billy Costigan: “I have to come here.”
Madolyn Madden: “I know you have to come here, but now that you’re here, what do you want?”
Billy Costigan: “You want the truth? Valium.”
Madolyn Madden: “You know if you lied, you would have an easier time getting what you wanted.”
Billy Costigan: “What does that say about what you do for a living?”
Madolyn Madden: “I just think we should have a few more meetings before we even talk about prescriptions.”
Billy Costigan: “Look… look, I’m having panic attacks, alright? The other night I thought I was having a fucking heart attack. I puked in a trash barrel on the way over here. I haven’t slept for fucking weeks.”
Madolyn Madden: “Is that true?”
Billy Costigan: “Yeah, that’s true. Alright? I said it was fucking true. I want some fucking pills and you’re gonna what? You’re gonna close my file? Is that what you’re going to do?”
Madolyn Madden: “No, I didn’t close your file. I…”
Billy Costigan: [Angry] “I thought I was supposed to tell the truth here, if only fucking here!”
Madolyn Madden: “You are! You are!”
Billy Costigan: “Christ. I mean, a guy comes in here against every, every instinct of privacy and self-reliance he has and what do you do? What do you do, huh? You send him off on the street to score smack, is that what you do? You’re fucking ridiculous!” [Madolyn hands him some Valium] “Two pills? Great. Why don’t you just give me a bottle of scotch and a handgun to blow my fucking head off! Are we done here with this psychiatry bullshit?”
Madolyn Madden: “You know what? You can leave!”
Billy Costigan: “What the fuck did I just put myself through? I’m fucking out of here. And what if that was a legitimate threat? Think about it fucking hotshot!”
• Billy Costigan: “What would you do if your boyfriend was standing right there and he saw us? Huh?”
Madolyn Madden: “I would lie.”
• “And I thought that I was the liar!”
|
| • Madolyn, as a psychiatrist, is often in professional business attire. As the story progresses, though, she looks increasingly weary and disheveled in appearance. As the film is set in Boston, Massachusetts, she speaks with a thick Boston accent. |
