• WHAT? — “The Bourne Identity” (2002) & “The Bourne Supremacy” (2004), the action film about a man who is on the run after he loses his memory and is trying to put the pieces back together, based on the series of novels.
• WHO? – Marie Kreutz, Bourne (Matt Damon)’s only companion through the movies. She goes on the run with him, changing her appearance and putting herself in the line of danger. She is played by Franka Potente.
• WHY? – Her loyalty to Bourne after knowing him for such a short period of time demonstrates her level of trust, and her willingness to leave her life behind to go on the run with him shows her love for him. She and Bourne quickly develop a strong connection. She is a truly dependable and trustworthy character amongst all of the lies and conspiracies populating the film.
• PLOT? –
• THE BOURNE IDENTITY: On a stormy night, a young man is pulled out of the Mediterranean Sea by the crew of a fishing boat. Thinking the young man is dead, a curious fisherman with a scalpel finds two bullets in his back and a miniature laser device in his hip. The laser reveals a Swiss bank account number. But our wet hero isn’t dead, and soon finds himself in Zurich. In the bank vault the young man discovers his name, Jason Bourne. In addition, he finds a baffling pile of different passports, all with his picture, and a huge pile of cash. In the U.S. Embassy, Jason Bourne discovers his love interest and travel partner, Marie, along with the fact that someone wants to kill him. Armed with a bag of money and mysterious martial arts skills, with Marie by his side, Bourne scours Paris for clues about his identity and past life… and finds himself in the middle of two assassination plots masterminded by the CIA.
• THE BOURNE SUPREMACY: When a CIA operation to purchase classified Russian documents is blown by a rival agent–who then shows up in the sleepy seaside village where Bourne (Damon) and Marie (Potente) have been living under assumed names–the pair collapse their lives and head out. Bourne, who promised retaliation should anyone from his former life attempt contact, is forced to once again take up his life as a trained assassin to survive. |

• Jason Bourne: “Who has a safety deposit box full of… money and six passports and a gun? Who has a bank account number in their hip? I come in here, and the first thing I’m doing is I’m catching the sightlines and looking for an exit.”
Marie Kreutz: “I see the exit sign, too, I’m not worried. I mean, you were shot. People do all kinds of weird and amazing stuff when they are scared.”
Jason Bourne: “I can tell you the license plate numbers of all six cars outside. I can tell you that our waitress is left-handed and the guy sitting up at the counter weighs two hundred fifteen pounds and knows how to handle himself. I know the best place to look for a gun is the cab of the gray truck outside, and at this altitude, I can run flat out for a half mile before my hands start shaking. Now why would I know that? How can I know that and not know who I am?”
• Jason Bourne: “I don’t wanna know who I am any more.”
Marie Kreutz: “Shh..”
Jason Bourne: “I don’t care. I don’t wanna know.”
Marie Kreutz: “Come on, we’ll…”
Jason Bourne: “Everything I found out, I wanna forget.”
Marie Kreutz: “It’s okay.”
Jason Bourne: “I don’t care who I am or what I did.”
Marie Kreutz: “It’s okay.”
Jason Bourne: “We have this money. We can hide. Could we do that? Is there any chance you can do that?”
Marie Kreutz: [Pause] “I don’t know. Come on.”
• Jason Bourne: “Whatever we do, we have to do it together. We have to..”
Marie Kreutz: “We? The only thing we had in common was that neither one of us knew who you were! We are past that now.”
Jason Bourne: “Marie! Listen to me! The police will find us, and the people who took that picture, the people who killed Wombosi, they are going to come here and they will kill us.”
Marie Kreutz: “The people you work for!”
Jason Bourne: “I will take you wherever you need to go. I will take you there, and I will leave you there. You can do whatever you want, you never have to see me again. But not here. If we stay here, we die.”
•Marie Kreutz: “Because sooner or later, you remember something good.”
Jason Bourne: “I do remember something good. All the time.” |
| • Marie originally had medium-toned hair, and cut it ouff, dying it dark in order to go on the run with Bourne. Later, when he finds her after a separation, she has grown her hair back and dyed it blonde. Her clothes mainly consist of low-key outfits, as her main objective during the bulk of the films is to blend in. |
